From the Valley of the Deer is an augmented reality artwork based on Valley of the Deer, a video installation produced in Scotland in 2013. In each city where the installation is exhibited, local GPS coordinates will be haunted by characters and scenes from the video, discoverable on walking tours near the exhibition site. These apparitions may also be stumbled upon as 'Points of Interest' by passersby, the locations visited long after by spirits of a distant valley. [For mobile devices]

[ openspace ] wilderness is a virtual nature preserve for a deserted section of internet. It is inhabited by more than 6,000 blogs that have been silent for 6 or more years. Whereas abandoned neighborhoods of cities – like Detroit – are undergoing rewilding (to restore and protect natural processes), what manner of new life is possible for vacated internet spaces? Visitors to [ openspace ] wilderness are invited to tag and explore its contents, and engage with the park's active population of predators and foragers. [ openspace ] wilderness is a finite and consumable space: it may be mapped and preserved, or overrun and overgrazed depending on the actions of its visitors.

A More Subtle Perplex is an experiment in quasi-linguistic formalism, in gibberish. Borrowing and inverting techniques from computer science and analytic linguistics, it blindly strives to produce the outer appearance of language – to be all form and no content. The Perplex produces synthetic languages, or at least their syntactic forms, by writing letters to you. The production of the text and the production of a given language are interdependent. iLib Shakespeare is a social media mashup that uses the dynamic input of users to continuously rewrite a sonnet of William Shakespeare. The user phonetically rhymes a word or short phrase, which is added to the database of variations available to other users. For instance unhappily forsworn can be rhymed as snappily untorn. Each time the page is loaded, a different selection of user-defined substitutions is used. A transposed midi version of "Lachrimae" or "Seven Tears," by John Dowland (1563-1626), can be heard as well, with "perturbations" that increase as the sonnet text is modified.

Grow Old is a streaming EP that reflects upon the malleability of digital audio in a cloud-based musical world. The music, regenerated daily by a simple computer program, changes subtly from one day to the next and more dramatically over the course of weeks, months, and years. So just as we constantly bring new perspectives and experiences to the music we hear, the music itself also changes over time. The web site includes the current version of each of the EP's four tracks, extensive notes on each track, the computer source code used to generate each track, and subscription links to automatically receive new versions as a podcast.

Over the past few decades China has been urbanizing at an astounding pace. In 2013, the People's Republic unveiled its plan to relocate 260 million people from China's countryside to one of 21 "mega regions" by 2020 (cbsnews.com). Such a significant shift will undoubtedly transform China's national character, which has been predominantly agrarian for millennia. Shadow Play weaves three interfaces, Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Physical Reality (PR), and combines the past and present – through time-honored imagery, paint, shadow play, and new media technologies – to immerse participants in the realities of contemporary China. Empire State transmits camera flashes from the Empire State Building's observation deck in New York City to the virtual observation deck of your computer screen. It also provides step-by-step instructions on how to create a LEGO replica of the iconic building, which lights up every time a visitor takes a photograph of Manhattan at night. Empire State is a continuous feedback loop of physical and virtual architectures (building/model/code) and of the perceptions of sightseers both on-site and on-line. INTERP is a series of digital sculptures generated by blending 100 unrelated photographs, placing them into simulated three-dimensional space, and importing them into photogrammetry software, tricking it into thinking that the photographs were of a single object. Thompson is interested in "useless" and culturally-derived data sets, so rather than use an arbitrary archive of photographs (a Google image search for a particular term, for example), it seemed more natural to use a finite set that he had generated himself (approximately 12,000 images when he began the project in 2012). Every photograph was used.

Condition:Used gathers bits and pieces of intimate spaces found online to create domestic scenes made out of paper. The pieces of furniture comprising these uncanny miniatures are replicas of items for sale on eBay: The listings’ images were transformed into printable/foldable paper templates, assembled to form intricate scenes, photographed, and displayed on the Condition:Used website. The visitors can click on each element in the dioramas to get a detailed view and a screenshot of its original eBay page. They are also invited to download and print any of the templates to create their own "paper doll house."

Promoting global, participatory democracy Global Direct is a political philosophy driven by information technology and the failure of current political systems to respond to the complexities, crises, and speed of contemporary life. Inspired by the tradition of utopian artistic visions, and informed by extensive research, Cirio's fifteen organograms illustrate alternative protocols, procedures and policies for actualizing a global democratic system. On the website you will also find an invitation to "Suggest a Slogan," video statements by prominent advocates of participatory politics, and more. The slogans and printed posters of the Global Direct campaign will be disseminated through social networks and in physical public spaces. Global Direct showcases how distributed networking technologies can be used for participatory decision-making, transparent accountability, and civil awareness.
