Velvet by David Crawford with funds from the National Endowment for the Arts In the course of its evolution, the U.S. flag displays visual associations to the British flag alongside to its own unique elements. The evolution of this visual language echoes the political and cultural revolution in that characteristics of the British Empire were borrowed or transformed to suit the needs of the American Revolutionaries. National Velvet opens a window into some of the forces at work behind a visual language that is often taken for granted. |

: : Recombinant by Eugene Thacker with funds from the Jerome Foundation This project is an attempt to assemble a body of discourses surrounding contemporary molecular genetics and biotechnology at the end of the millennium. In the same way that researchers approach genetics and biotech on the level of information and code, this project is a selective gathering of cloned webpages, a "discourse network" of the genetic body. |

Empty Velocity by Angie Eng with funds from the Jerome Foundation Empty Velocity is a 21st Century Taoist journey of stop motion interruptions, joints moving simultaneously, empty rooms and random velocity. Imagery and text based on the Eastern philosophy is combined with symbols of transitional points or joints. Both negative and positive energies in the form of velocity are represented along the journey. These forces of physical and cyber work together to express the vital energy (choi). |

CultureMap by Andy Deck with funds from The Greenwall Foundation Part visualization and part abstraction, CultureMap is an imaging system that depicts the evolving content of the Web. Using data collected from search engines, it produces an interactive image that reflects the prevalence of various words in the pages of the Web. Keywords: meta-cartographic information art. |

Genetic Response System 3.0 by Diane Ludin with funds from The Greenwall Foundation Each day new data emerges tracing the shifting boundaries between the 'organic' and 'non-organic'. Genetic Response System 3.0 reflects these shifts. In this version search strings or "Viroids" seek data online specific to these eroding boundaries.
