Left To My Own Devices
2003

The codes of digital games are used to explore a narrative of loss and awkward renewal. The game’s main character navigates a space of playful interaction and fragmented animation. Game segments take inspiration from the shifting emotional states associated with loss. The character’s backstory is gradually revealed through game play.

Themes of surveillance and disconnection are explored through fragmented animation. Seven open-ended narratives combine to create a moody reflection on technological control.

Modular animations randomly flow within a rhythmic and thematic structure. The dramatic convention of beginning, middle and end is replaced with a looping narrative architecture.

Trigger-happy, abstract animations are remapped to the movement patterns of pixel-like blocks.

Artist Statement
In my work I explore personal and psychological narratives. These explorations are often influenced by digital culture. Using the web as my distribution platform, I hope to find ways to unravel the control of traditional storytelling, adopt nonlinear and nonhierarchical structures, develop more responsive interaction and include moments of chance.
